Civic Ecology

Inhalt der Veranstaltung

Global change is transforming the planet at unprecedented rates. Climate change, massive species extinction, land degradation, resources depletion, overpopulation, poverty and social injustice are all the result of human choices and non-sustainable ways of life. The gravity and complexity of this crisis compel us to rethink our relationship with nature and revise our ways of addressing social and environmental problems. The question is: What do we have to do and how much do we have to change to create a more just and ecologically-sustainable society? This course seeks to improve our understanding of the social causes of environmen-tal degradation and the necessary actions to reverse the non-sustainable trends and ways of life of modern society.

The course is held by Vicente Lopes, PhD, Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Bre-men in 2012/2013 from Texas State University (USA) where he is a Professor of Environmen-tal Studies. In this course he presents in five lectures the essential contents of the concept “Civic Ecology” which aims at a better understanding of human impacts on nature and the ways of dealing with the evolving problems.
