The course begins with an introduction of the need for education for sustainable development (ESD). Based on that, it imparts the theoretical basics of this concept as well as its practical relevance. Important assumptions of sustainable development, inter-generational fairness and globalization are discussed. This is followed by an explanation of the goals of education for sustainable development as well as the competences one can derive from the course. It also discusses the teaching concepts of education for sustainable development, especially the self-directed learning. The last section constitutes the development status of ESD, the effects of ESD and explains the possibilities of integrating of ESD in the system of education.



The course is open to students of every discipline. You can receive 3 Creditpoints with a workload of circa 90 hours. This time period includes watching and working through the educational videos, revising the presentational slides, dealing with the exercises, reading additional literature and preparing for the exam. The exam will be an online test, which you can complete at a nearby university.

The educational videos can generally be used by anybody on any level. Even school teachers can incorporate the provided material into their own classes or other groups (e.g. companies) can profit, too.
